A Bride’s Story: Jezelle + Jarett

This stunning, classic wedding in the Canadian mountains will surely take your breath away. Check out Jezelle and Jarett’s story for wedding ideas and inspiration.

Despite working in two completely different industries, Jezelle and Jarett’s love for hockey ended up being what brought them together! They were married on September 10, 2016 at the gorgeous Delta Lodge at Kananaskis in Alberta.

From the bride:

I work as a Pediatric Emergency Registered Nurse at a local children’s hospital. Jarett is a successful realtor who owns a local branch of Realty Executives as well as a rental property management company. We met when we kept bumping into each other at a local sports bar cheering for our favourite hockey team – the Edmonton Oilers. It took Jarett three tries to get my number but when he finally did, we texted daily for a month before going on our first date – watching an Oilers hockey game, of course! Our love of sports, traveling, and family and friends is definitely what brought us together.

Jarett originally planned a romantic proposal December 2014 while going on a hike with our dogs. Everything was set: we both got the time off work, the mountain cabin was booked, and the ring was purchased and safely secured – or so Jarett thought. Three weeks earlier, I found our then mischievous 6-month old puppy chewing on a blue “Tacori” box! I knew what “Tacori” was so I got excited and panicked at the same time. I quickly put the box on the kitchen counter (without peaking, I promise!) and tried to pretend nothing happened.

When Jarett saw the box wasn’t where it was supposed to be, he asked me some questions but I just couldn’t hide my smile. He debated whether or not to stick with his original plan but by the end of the night, he decided to follow our dog’s “prompting” and got down on one knee, told me how I was his best friend (from what I remembered before I started tearing up) and asked me to marry him. It ended up being the perfect timing because we spent the rest of December celebrating our engagement during the holidays with our family and friends.

I was one of those girls who had been dreaming of her wedding since she was a little girl. I grew up perusing through wedding magazines and hoping one day to have my own. We both envisioned a classy and elegant wedding. The mountains of Kananaskis, Alberta are so majestic that we kept it simple with decorations to let the beauty of the mountains shine on their own. We had an outdoor ceremony with a beautiful mountain background and held a romantic tent reception under the stars.

I cant even put into words how perfect our wedding was! Even Mother Nature co-operated by giving us great weather and waited until the next day for it to snow! We were engaged for a year and a half and that really helped give us plenty of time to have things ready. We also had the best team of wedding coordinators and vendors that we could’ve asked for that helped bring our dream wedding to life.

I always hear that the day goes by too fast and even though it seemed like it, I just remember enjoying every single moment of it – from the moment I woke up, to singing Britney Spears with my girls while getting ready, to reading each other our personal vows, to seeing the dance floor jam-packed at the end of the night. We both deeply felt everyone’s love for us that we couldn’t help but tear up during our thank you speech. It was the wedding I’ve always dreamed of!

One of the most memorable details that day was that our dogs were a part of our wedding party. Lola was our flower girl and Hendrix (our mischievous puppy who found the box) was our ring bearer. I didn’t see them all morning because they got ready in Jarett’s room. When I was walking down the aisle, Hendrix stood up and started barking as if to call out, “Mom!”. It was such a cute and funny moment cause he looked so excited to see me!

I chose Henkaa for my bridesmaids because I’ve been a bridesmaid before and I swore that if I were to get married, I wouldn’t make my girls spend a ton of money on a dress that they would never wear again. The Sakura Convertible Dress was perfect because it allowed all of my girlfriends to style each of their dresses in a way that best flattered each of their bodies. They could wear the dress one style in the morning and style it a different way for the reception at night! We also loved that it was wrinkle resistant, and that it was made in Canada.

A Bride’s Story: Kendra + Derek

This DIY garden wedding is sure to get your crafty senses tingling! Check out Kendra’s and Derek’s story for wedding ideas and inspiration!

If you’re looking for the sweetest happily ever after, then you’ve definitely found it. We love Kendra’s and Derek’s story and the way they intertwined their favorite hobbies – woodwork and reading – into their special day. Kendra and Derek were married at Westfield Heritage Village in Rockton, Ontario on September 10, 2016.

From the bride:

Derek and I met in high school and quickly became very close friends shortly after. We stayed in touch after we graduated and started dating mid-way through university. February 2017 marks twelve years of us being together! Now I work as a nurse and Derek is a software engineer. We have an 11-year-old dog, Frisket, to round out our little family.

Derek popped the question on Christmas day after almost 10 years of dating! I worked that day and headed straight to my family’s house after work to join them for Christmas dinner. Derek had gone to spend Christmas with his family since I was working a late shift. Later that night we both met back at our house to spend some quality time together since we hadn’t seen each other all day.

I logged onto my computer and turned around to get something only to see him right there in front of me with a little box in his hands! I was really surprised and at first I thought he was teasing me! After I calmed down a bit and realized he was serious, I definitely said yes. I was still in my hospital scrubs at that point and my face was all red and splotchy from crying. Although we couldn’t really celebrate right at that moment since I had to go back to work again in 6 hours, it’s still a very special moment to me that I love to look back on.

We really wanted to have a low-key celebration with all of our closest friends and family. Our theme was inspired by a blend of trees, books, apples, and wood. We tried to incorporate all the things we love since my husband does woodworking as a hobby and I love to read. We even made apple-shaped cookies to use as our cake toppers and my husband made these amazing wooden apple crates himself for all of the guests’ tables.

I made the entire bridal party’s bouquets out of paper, including sheet music from our processional and first dance songs. I added a little individual touch for each bridesmaid’s bouquet and combined all four elements in my own bouquet to unite all of our themes. We wanted our wedding to be as personal as could be, so everything was as DIY as we could make it!

We wanted every part of our wedding to be about our family and friends. My hair stylist was someone I went to high school with, and my makeup artist was my husband’s cousin. My wonderful photographer is one of my best friends too. We had a priest come to our house in the early afternoon as we were getting ready to sign the paperwork to legally marry us, and then we went to the venue for pictures before our ceremony.

Our friend, a comedian from Hamilton, performed our ceremony and then we went to the hall to celebrate! We hired a local bartender we really liked to manage the bar and our music was performed by a musician we used to go see every Thursday when we were still in university. Later on we had a food truck come do our catering, and we even had a surprise visit from our favorite donair place in Burlington. They brought us some late night donair pizzas and joined in the fun! It really felt like a whole community effort and made every aspect of it so personal and special for us.

I wore a Pure Ivory Sakura Maxi Dress in the Charlotte Style with a few minor alterations. Instead of tying the knot, I used the Princess Starburst Mini Brooch Set to pinch the fabric together, and just wrapped it across my back. I added a Pure Ivory Hana Chiffon Overlay and topped the look off with the Blooming Vine Brooch on my waist to add some more sparkle.

I matched my hair clip with pearl accents to tie in to my two pearl necklaces, one of which was an antique heirloom I received on my 18th birthday, while the other was borrowed from my mother. The Henkaa dress was my ‘something new’ item, and my toenails were painted bright blue to complete the traditional saying!

I already had two Henkaa dresses – a Sakura Midi and a Sakura Maxi – that I had gotten to wear as a guest to my friends’ weddings, and I loved the feel of the dresses. The versatility and the fact that they’re one size fits all were an added bonus! I asked my bridesmaids if they were willing to wear the dresses and they all jumped at the chance. It was an easy choice! We picked out the Emerald Green dress to go with our wedding theme and went to the Toronto Showroom together to have a style session done.

What I loved most was that we could all wear something similar while showcasing each of our individually unique styles. It also worked well for everyone’s body shape and we loved that there were no dress fittings required! I’m so happy that I can wash the dress myself and that it’s so low maintenance. I plan to cut the dress to knee-length this year to use as a summer dress during the warmer seasons.

My favorite moment from the whole day was walking into the hall as they announced us husband and wife for the first time and seeing all of our friends and family cheering for us. It was incredible to see over 100 people from so many different points in our lives all together under one roof, ready to celebrate our special day with us. Having friends from grade school, high school, university, work, as well as some family I rarely get to see, all come together for us was such an amazing feeling. My husband and I have been together for a long time now, but I was overwhelmed by the love and support I felt from all those closest to me.

A Bride’s Story: Kari and Jesse

Kari is an independent Stylist with Henkaa, which means she’s a pro with ConvertiStyle products and really knows how to style! Because she was already an experienced Henkaanista, we were so excited to see her beautiful wedding come together. Her bridesmaids wore a mix of Sakura Maxi Convertible Dresses and Iris Convertible Dresses and it came together  seamlessly. The bridesmaids in different style straps and sleeves looked stunning in Burgundy Wine, matching the brides beautiful hair. And that bridal flower crown? We’re in love! Read more about Kari and Jesse’s big day below:

My most memorable moment: I have a special needs brother. When the DJ got one person per table to stand up and get involved in a dance competition, my brother was one of those lucky few. None of my family actually knew how he would do being unassisted on the dance floor. However, we were all shocked when my brother know every move for the Cha Cha Slide! He completely blew the competition away and rocked that dance floor!

Henkaa offered a wonderful product that fit all of my girls perfectly. Several gals came from out of town, so it traveled very well and looked great on the big day. I was impressed by the color selection and that was the most difficult decision about the process! I’m even more happy that my girls can actually wear the dress again and no one but them will know that it was a bridesmaid dress.

Carlos and Amerylis’ Plum Purple bridesmaids

After seeing so many Henkaa weddings, we’re still always amazed by the uniqueness and creativity of our brides and bridesmaids. This particular wedding really caught our eye though! While we’ve seen many weddings featuring Sakura Convertible Dresses, this one features bridesmaids wearing TWO completely different dress designs. Three of the bridesmaids are wearing the Iris Convertible Dress and only one is wearing the Sakura! The skirt styles of both of these dresses are identical so they all look perfectly unified together in the photos but they each were able to choose dresses in styles that they were comfortable in. The mix of bridesmaids with sleeves and without (or with a single sleeve) really make every maid’s personality and style stand out.

From the sunny outdoor ceremony to the rowdy dance party reception, this wedding was gorgeous! Congrats Carlos and Amerylis!

a bride’s story: julie

Beautiful Bride Julie submitted a wedding story that instantly caught our eye! Her bridesmaids in Turquoise Teal stood out so brightly and looked so elegant in their Sakura Maxi Convertible Dresses, we just had to share them with you too. Read on to see why Julie chose Henkaa for her big day:

When: June 8, 2014
Where: Richmond Hill Country Club

Bridesmaids in Henkaa's Sakura Maxi Convertible Dress in Turquoise Teal - The perfect dress for matched but mismatched maids
My bridesmaids wore the Sakura Turquoise Teal Maxi Convertible Dress – all different styles! They all loved their dress!

All my girls got to wear the style they felt best and happiest in (in a beautiful colour that they would wear again). I didn’t want to ask my girls to buy a dress that they would never want to wear again so we decided to stay away from the bridal stores after a few unsuccessful visits. After visiting Henkaa for our first style appointment…we decided Henkaa was it!

I love that my bridesmaids got to choose their own style. The fact that all of my bridesmaids felt AND looked their best made Henkaa the BEST possible choice!

a bride’s story: stephanie

Dove Grey was newly added to the Henkaa palette earlier this year and we’re just now starting to see how beautifully it’s been coming together in weddings. We’re so inspired by these gorgeous submissions. Stephanie recently sent us photos of her late summer wedding and we fell in love with how she creatively had her Maid of Honor stand out in a Hana Chiffon Overlay in a contrasting color! We’re also loving her adorable niece in a Sakura Mini Dress! Check out her bridesmaids in Dove Grey and read her wedding story below.

I wanted my wedding to have the modern/ vintage vibe. I felt the dove grey midi convertible dresses really captured this. I had all of my bridesmaids in different styles and my maid of honor with a pink chiffon overlay to set her apart.

One of my favorite moments was when we were all getting ready. Before I slipped into my wedding dress I was wrapping all the girls in their Henkaa styles. The pictures really capture this special time between a bride and her bridesmaids.

Henkaa's Sakura Convertible Dresses let each of the bridesmaids choose their own styles but still match perfectly!
A friend of mine had recommended Henkaa to me saying she loves their product. I went to the Henkaa store with my bridesmaids to try them on. I fell in love with the versatility and color of the dresses. I wanted something that my girls could wear over and over again and not buy a typical bridesmaid dress that would most likely just hang in their closets.

Henkaa Sakura Mini Convertible Dress in Magneta Purple - Perfect Dress for Junior Bridesmaids

I had my 12 year old niece as an MC and she wanted something more sophisticated to wear, so we tried the mini convertible dress and she LOVED it, she will now be able to wear this for years to come whether as a dress, skirt or top. I am so so happy I chose to go with Henkaa. I would recommend them to anyone for any occasion.
